Three members of the Hanson Beavers’ wrestling team competed in the Region 2B Wrestling Tournament held in Salem on Saturday, February 22.

In the 113 pound weight class, Maverick Haiar fell (0:50) to Legend Frederick of Tri-Valley. In his second match, Haiar fell (2:12) to David Wollmann of Marion-Freeman.

Jason Porth wrestled in the 157 pound weight class. In his first match, Porth had a bye. In his second match, Porth lost by technical fall, 16-1, to Hayes Johnson of Elk Point-Jefferson. Next, Porth won by fall (2:41) over Bo Stone of Parker. In his fourth match, Porth won by major decision, 13-2, over Jacoben Schmidt of Baltic. Next, Porth lost by decision, 7-1, to Brock Bonte of Garretson. With his tournament record of 3-2, Porth advanced to the fifth place match against Mason Ahlers of Chester Area. Porth lost by decision, 7-6, to Ahlers.

Stetson Riggs wrestled in the 215 pound weight class. Riggs lost by fall (1:26) to Aiden Hilbelink of Chester Area in his first match. Riggs came back in his second match and defeated Elliot Powell of Tri-Valley by major decision, 13-1. In his next match, Riggs won by fall (1:33) over Gunnar Swenson of Canton. With his 2-1 tournament record, Riggs advanced to the third place match against Hilbelink. Riggs won by major decision, 10-2, over Hilbelink, placing third overall.

On Thursday, February 20, Hanson freshman, Kathryn Jarding was the lone Hanson girl wrestler to compete in the Region 2B Wrestling Tournament in Salem. In her first match, Jarding won by fall (5:32) over Tabitha Arneson of Baltic. Jarding fell (0:33) to Regina Stoeser of Harrisburg in her second match. With her record of 1-1, Jarding moved to the third place match against Arneson. Jarding won by fall (2:39) over Arneson, placing third overall.

By placing third, Riggs and Jarding advanced to the State Wrestling Tournament at Summit Arena in Rapid City on February 27-March 1.
