The Hanson varsity boys’ basketball team faced the Leola/Frederick Area Titans at the 43rd Annual Hanson Boys Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 25.
The Titans jumped out to a six point lead in the first quarter by scoring 28 points to the Beavers’ 22 points. The Beavers came back to tie the game at half when they put 16 points on the board while the Titans had 10 points. Halftime score was tied at 38-38. There was even scoring in the third by the Beavers and the Titans, 17 points each. In the fourth, the Beavers were able to take the lead and secured the win, outscoring the Titans, 13-9. Final score was Hanson 68, Leola/Frederick Area 64.
Leading the Beavers in scoring was Tye Hernandez with 20 points. Ben Wilber cashed in 18 points followed by AJ Wilber and Sutton Dewald with 13 points apiece.
Dewald dished out six assists in the game while Hernandez had five assists.
A. Wilber led the team in rebounding with seven boards followed by Dewald and B. Wilber with five rebounds each. Hernandez and Carter Popp had three rebounds apiece.
Defensively, Popp had two steals and Hernandez had one block.
With the win, the Beavers’ record moved to 8-3.
The Beavers travel to Forestburg on Tuesday, January 28, to take on Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and take on the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies on Friday.
